Farm to Fork Fondo, a unique farm-to-table bicycling event, is returning to Wolfe’s Neck Farm in Maine on August 26 and 27, 2017.
Farm to Fork Fondo – Maine is non-competitive, and features aid stations on farms throughout Southern Maine that serve chef-prepared food made from each farm’s ingredients. In 2016, the inaugural edition of Farm to Fork Fondo – Maine sold out, drawing nearly 500 cyclists to the region, and highlighting 8 local farm businesses.
This summer’s event generated an estimated $506,000 in local economic impact, and made over $7,000 in charitable contributions to local organizations. Next year’s event will expand, with an anticipated attendance of 600 riders.
“One of our core goals is to encourage a richer mutual understanding between farmers and consumers. We want participants to appreciate Maine’s rural beauty, but also see firsthand where their food comes from, and give farmers a chance to feel better understood by the general public,” says Tyler Wren, Farm to Fork Fondo Event Director, and founder of organizer Wrenegade Sports. “Many of our participants live in urban areas, and this may be one of the only opportunities they have to meet the families who invest a lifetime in feeding the rest of us.”
“The Maine Sports Commission is excited for the return of the Farm to Fork Fondo next summer, says Sheila Brennan Nee, Strategic Director of the Maine Sports Commission. “This first-time event resulted in an impressive economic impact while making a positive imprint on the Southern Maine community. The beginning of a rich relationship is forming between Maine and organizer Wrenegade Sports as this unique activity becomes an annual, signature event!”
