Masters sports athletes from across Australia and Oceania will converge on Cairns for the Great Barrier Reef Masters Games next year.

Games co-ordinator Jennifer Thompson said the economy would benefit from the sporting event, being held in Cairns for the third year.

“We have about 2000 people travelling locally, from interstate and internationally to attend the games,” she said.

“They spend four or five nights in the city for the games and then they usually go to explore the region and what it has to offer.”

The four-day games will include judo, tenpin bowling, swimming, soccer, rugby league and golf for the first time.

“The event has really grown in terms of team sports,” said Thompson.

The Great Barrier Reef Masters Games begin on May 25 next year.
